For decades, Kollywood has been integrated in Tamilnadu's cultural sects. The actors represented Tamilnadu's values and principles on a national scale. The state prided itself in being morally rich with attributes like humility, courage against adversity and philanthropy. A star like Rajinikanth became the face of these attributes. Kamal Hassan represented the state's creative and risk-taking spirit.

Then followed the next generation of actors including Vijay, Ajith, Vikram and Suriya. Though the actors were defined by their roles and film choices, they became a beacon of hope for passionate actors from non-film background. Though Vijay's father S.A. Chandrasekhar was a successful filmmaker, his journey was riddled with box office and media scruity early in his career.

The actors were known to be "respectful family men" and this quality became the next value the audience projected on to the stars like they rooted for. Vijay got married to Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan- Canadian, Ajith married his female co-star Shalini and Suriya and Jyothika love story was a tabloid favourite and he eventually married her after a 5-year long relationship.

Though the success of the actors were decided by the quality of the films, the audience of Tamilnadu expected their stars to take the moral high ground and imbibe the state's culture even in their personal life.

However, with the recent disruptions in this long-standing system with Chief Minister Vijay's relationship with Trisha, Jeyam Ravi's open digital fisticuffs with his ex-wife and Dhanush's public spat with Nayanthara and Silambaran's spiritual transformation and bachelorhood has shaken the pillars of the temple built by the stars of the yesteryears.

As Kollywood are trying to disengage their fans and audience from their personal lives, the recent TN election resutts that witnessed a historic victory by TVK leader Vijay does indicate a shift in the audience perception. With the new-age actors making risky personal choices despite the gravity of the impact on their film career, the audience have decided to draw a clearn line in their favourite star's life.
