We have seen Alia Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma sizzle in a Benarasi countless number of times in classic favourites like Gaurang Shah to upcoming brands like Raw Mango and Kshitij Jalori. The Kingpins of Bollywood Fashion, Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra, continue to be the reigning choices for all Bollywood Weddings. Except Deepika Padukone, who re-designed her mother's Kanchipuram Silk Saree for her wedding.

This is the case as far as Bollywood is concerned.

However, Kollywood Actors have abstained from taking a stand for their homegrown fabrics. Their wardrobe for public appearances have been devoid of silk sarees that are woven in Tamilnadu.

What is the reason behind this ?

Actors do not know, nor do they care what they wear as their clothes are picked by their Stylists. The real question is, should the actors care about representing our weaves and be more concerned about their Stylists predominantly picking brands chosen by Bollywood Biggies.

Our clothes determine who we are in the most intrinsic way. A Bollywood adaptation of a South Indian girl is always clad in a Kanchipuram Silk with Jasmine flowers. Can we call this typecasting or do they simply mirror our culture?

Neeta Ambani in an ink blue Kanchipuram swooned the whole nation. Actor-turned-entrepreneur Sneha Prasanna is one of the very few artists from Tamil Industry who was always seen in Kanchipuram silk sarees in all her events which eventually led her to start her own saree brand. Actor Jothika in a Pastel Kanchipuram at the Ambanis' Wedding was the most circulated picture among fashion brands in Chennai.

Decades back, Artists from the South were seen only in Kanchipurams including iconic Actor Rekha whose Golden silk saree is still an evergreen choice of every saree patron.

Actors riding the Pan-Indian Star wave, are obliged to fit into the spectrum of "accepted" Fashion choices. This leads to all our actors blending in, as standing might close half-open doors.

At one point of time, films were considered the greatest influence on human psyche. The audience emulated the characters they saw on screens which led few actors like Suriya adopt a conscious choice of playing teetotallers on screen.

Now the lives of actors are also scrutinised to a large degree. The audience may not question the actors' choices, however they leave an indelible mark on the millions of followers who see their favourite stars in fabrics that are not native made.

Is it time our stars ask, "Why not a Kanchipuram silk?"
