The Makers of Suzhal, Pushkar and Gayathri, in a recent interview promoting Season 2 of the #1 Tamil Series Suzhal, reveal about the standard procedures adopted by OTT in accepting scripts for Webseries.

The Suzhanl Writers make a bold statement stating Writers are unaware of structuring Webseries as per the formats prescribed by OTT platforms like Amazon Prime, JioHotstar and Netflix. They reveal that filmmakers who are unable to find producers for their films, end up seeking OTT platforms by converting their movie scripts into Webseries which is a major reason why submissions are rejected.
OTT platforms, on an average, receive 30-40 scripts everyday and work with stringent protocols before onboarding a project. Platforms like Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and Netflix consider Webseries as an investment to churn new subscribers. If the potential of the script falls short in fulfilling this promise, submissions are ruthlessly rejected.
Pushkar and Gayathri also mention they consider themselves privileged to have their feet inside the Amazon Prime family of Collaborators, as they firmly believe that OTT will overthrow theatres one day. Rewinding 10 years back, movies celebrating their 100th day on silver screen is a long lost dream compared to films running a measly total of 28 days in the theatres.
In a latest interview, Archana Kalpathi, Creative Producer of AGS Productions also affirmed how OTT platforms levy Non-negotiables in their contracts regarding restrictions of running the films in multiplexes along with a 4-week brief window for theatre screening.
These platforms pay large sums to come onboard as Digital Partners only if their terms are accepted. The biggest filmmakers have succumbed to this new normal and have been agreeing to the highhandedness of their Digital Partners since 2020 as theatres are still struggling to find their financial footing post the pandemic.
Only exceptional films like Love Today, Dragon, Pushpa, Manjummel Boys and Animal have made a remarkable mark in the theatre business. However, more than 100 films go unnoticed crippling production houses, leaving them helpless in the nets served by OTT platforms.
